The ”sandwich model” of mind is a picture of the relation between an agent and the world:

  • The world, or “environment,” produces “data” for the agent in terms of perceptual input, which transforms their internal, or “mental,” state;
  • The agent chooses actions on the basis of their current mental state, potentially transforming the environment.

This view appears in many literatures, including § Reinforcement Learning (e.g., Markov decision processes).
